Fractures and Trauma

A fracture is a break in the continuity of a bone, and it can follow a fall, an accident or a sports injury. Dr. Emeel Hourani, consultant orthopedic surgeon in Amman, assesses limb fractures, joint fractures and children's fractures, starting with an accurate diagnosis before deciding on treatment.

Note: If you suspect a fracture: keep the limb still, do not move it unnecessarily and do not try to put the bone back yourself. Seek urgent care if there is an open wound, clear deformity or numbness.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if there is a fracture?

Severe pain, swelling, a change in the shape of the limb and difficulty using it are signs that call for assessment. A fracture cannot be confirmed without an examination and X-ray.

Does every fracture need surgery?

No. Many fractures are treated with a cast or splint, and surgery is considered when the fracture is unstable, displaced or involves a joint.

What should I do right after the injury?

Keep the limb still in its position, avoid moving it, apply a cold pack wrapped in a cloth and go to a doctor. Do not try to put the bone back yourself.
