The knee is one of the joints most often injured or worn down, and its problems include ACL tears, meniscus tears and osteoarthritis. Dr. Emeel Hourani, consultant orthopedic, joint and sports medicine surgeon in Amman, focuses on knee and ACL injuries, and always starts with an accurate diagnosis before choosing treatment.

Note: These pages are general education and do not replace an in-person examination. If you have severe pain, fast swelling, or cannot put weight on your knee, see a doctor without delay.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an injury and osteoarthritis of the knee?

Injuries such as ligament and meniscus tears usually follow a sudden twist or fall. Osteoarthritis develops gradually as the joint cartilage wears down. An examination and imaging help show which one is behind your symptoms.

Do all knee problems need surgery?

No. Many knee problems improve with non-surgical care such as rest, activity changes and physiotherapy. Surgery is considered when that is not enough or when an injury leaves the joint unstable.

When should I see an orthopedic surgeon about knee pain?

See one if the pain is severe or persistent, if there is swelling, if the knee gives way or locks, or if it affects your walking. The knee pain guide explains more.
